Phuket and Koh Phi Phi

We arrived in Thailand at long last. Unfortnately I was struck down by a chest infection so we couldn't do much- not a massive deal though as Phuket is a bit of a hole. We had an ordeal arriving at our hotel. When we asked them if they could collect us from the airport which they claim they do, they said it would be easier for us to get a taxi as if we aren't waiting for them when they arrived they would leave and still charge us....charming. We got an airport taxi which turned out to be a packed mini-van that would do a series of stops. Half way along our journey it stopped off at an office and we had to go and tell them (again) where we wantd to go. Mike told the lady and she said they would not tak us up the hill, they would drop us off on the main road. Of course Mike complained but her response was if we weren't happy then she would drop us back off at the airport and refund us. I really do hate th human race sometimes. They dropped us off on the main road but we couldn't see our hotel anywhere. When we asked the driver (who had already dumped our bags off the bus) where it was he pointed up an alleyway. We went up this alleyway in the dark and it was like a setting of a night crimewatch scene. It soon became apparent there were no hotels up this path. We turned around in the dark and headed to the nearest place with any sort of civilization. I called the hotel complaining and askd the man who owned the restaurant we stumbled across to ask for directions for us. It turned out it wasn't that far away and so we headed off once more up a different crimewatch alley which featured a massive dead rat with its guts everywhere (I went back the next day to take a picture to tag my friend Cockers in, she hates gross things and it amuses me to tag her in such things). We got to the hotel and for that night and the next I spent the majority of it getting bed rest. We did however venture out to the pharmacy to get me some goods and to a clinic to see if Mike's stitches were ready to come out; they weren't.
This takes us up to the 17th December (my 25th birthday). We spent the majority of the day travelling by bus and ferry to the island called 'Koh Phi Phi' (pronounced 'Pee Pee') where we would be staying for 3 nights. No cars are allowed on this island so once we had gotten through the crowds and paid the tax for being on the island we found the gy representing our hotel and he loaded our bags onto a cart and pulled it at full speed through the maze of Phi Phi- it was embarassing that Mike and I found it hard to keep up with him (mind....don't forget I had a chest infection). After climbing up what felt like a mini Everest we had reached our hotel reception. When I say hotel I really mean tin shacks set into the side of a very steep hill with steps that wouldn't look out of place on set of a Jack and the Beanstalk pantomine- very steep and each individual step came upto my knee in height- can't stress how dangerous these steps were. We checked in and were given a free banana shake which was nice after the trek upto the hotel. We then started to conquer the stairs- such an effort. Once we reached the row on which our chack was on we were still a bit causious as it felt as though a tin block had been sellotaped and pva glued onto the side of a hill! The room wasn't great and shower had a really funny smell- happy feckin birthday to me! I didn't manage to get one decent nights sleep here as I was convinced a rat kept breaking into the room and scratching about- I made Mike turn the lights on a check a few times but of course it is going to hide when the lights come on- there was definately something very much alive in the room at night. After I saw the dinosaur of a cockcroach scuttle from the base of the bed I was officially freaked out. I think I deserve a medal or some form of recognition for sticking it out at such a place. My birthday night was rubbish due to the damned illness. The next day we ventured out and got the stitches out of Mike's head (still hating that b*****d hotel in Laos!). We explored a bit and went swimming in the hotel pool. I lasted less than 2 minutes due to the pool being way below standard and full of creatures and the fact I couldn't breathe due to the excersize. That night we went out but I didn't drink TOO much as I wanted to get fully better. We met these two girls, one from London and one from somewhere else in Europe- I can't remember where. We ended up moving onto an amateur boxing match (tourists) and then onto the beach party which was so cool. I went to the bar and got chatting to two Russian blokes when a little while later Mike comes up to me a desperately wants to go....I took this as he was going to be sick but once I was a safe distance away he told me that one of the girls we were with had come onto him and he just wanted to leave. She had a bf back home and knew Mike and I were together but it didn't seem to bother her. Nice. I'm getting too old for this going out malarky! The next day was chilled and a hangover day where we explored a bit more and slobbed  a bit before getting an early night to be up in the morning to make the 8 hour journey to Koh Samui to meet mum at the airport!!!!! I was so excited to see her!!!!!
*It won't let me upload pictures at the moment- will do a picture post when I can*
